How to warm up a new WhatsApp number
Warming up means building a normal-looking history on a new WhatsApp number before you send at volume. Spend the first week on real two-way conversations, a complete profile and a small number of outbound messages, then increase gradually — roughly 30 on day one, rising by about 10 a day. BuzzRelay automates the ramp with its Number Warmer; the conversational part you do yourself.
Why a new number needs warming up
Account age is one of the strongest inputs to WhatsApp's spam detection. A number registered days ago that immediately messages hundreds of strangers matches the spam pattern almost exactly, and it will be restricted quickly regardless of how carefully you space the messages.
Warming up gives the number a history: inbound messages, replies, a filled-in profile, and a send volume that grows instead of starting at the ceiling.
Warming up is not a way to make a cold list safe. It addresses account age, which is one signal. If recipients did not consent, they will still report you and the number will still be restricted. See How to avoid a WhatsApp ban.
Before day one
Finish the account setup properly. An empty profile reads as throwaway:
- Set a profile photo — a logo or a real face.
- Set the display name to your actual business name.
- If you use WhatsApp Business, fill in the description, category, address and hours.
- Keep the SIM active. A number that loses its SIM can fail re-verification later.
The ramp
This is the schedule BuzzRelay's Number Warmer follows by default — 30 messages on day one, increasing by 10 each day across a 7-day period:
| Day | Outbound cap | What to do alongside |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 | Message people you know. Aim for replies, not reach. |
| 2 | 40 | Join one or two groups. Answer anything inbound. |
| 3 | 50 | Start a small opted-in campaign with a wide delay range. |
| 4 | 60 | Keep replying to inbound conversations. |
| 5 | 70 | Watch delivery speed; slowdown means back off. |
| 6 | 80 | Increase only if nothing looks throttled. |
| 7 | 90 | Review the report rate before scaling further. |
| 8+ | Raise gradually | Work up toward 200/day over the following week or two. |
These numbers are deliberately conservative. Nothing forces you to hit the cap — it is a ceiling, not a target.
Turning on the Number Warmer in BuzzRelay
Go to Settings → Sending Controls. The Number Warmer is on by default, and you can change three values:
| Setting | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Warmer enabled | On | Applies the ramp to newly connected devices. |
| Warmer days | 7 | How long the ramp runs before the normal daily limit applies. |
| Start count | 30 | The cap on day one. |
| Increment | 10 | How much the cap rises each day. |
Once the ramp finishes, the device falls back to the ordinary daily message limit (200 by default). If you are warming a number for a particularly cold audience, raise Warmer days to 14 and drop the increment to 5.
The part BuzzRelay cannot do for you
The warmer controls volume. It does not create conversations, and conversations are what actually make a number look established. During the first week:
- Get replies. Message colleagues, existing customers, anyone who will answer. Two-way threads are the strongest positive signal available to you.
- Answer inbound quickly. A number that receives and responds looks like a business, not a broadcaster.
- Avoid links early. Link-heavy first messages from a new number are a poor start.
Signs you are ramping too fast
- Messages take noticeably longer to show two ticks.
- The campaign report shows a rising failure rate.
- You get a temporary restriction notice in the app.
Any of these means pause that number for at least 24 hours and resume at roughly half the volume. Pushing through a soft restriction is what turns it into a permanent one — see My WhatsApp number was restricted or banned.
Warm several numbers at once. If you know you will need volume, connect and warm three numbers in parallel during week one. Three warmed numbers at a moderate daily count is far safer than one number pushed hard — see Run multiple devices and spread volume.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to warm up a WhatsApp number?
About a week for a basic ramp, and two to three weeks before a number comfortably handles a few hundred messages a day. BuzzRelay's Number Warmer defaults to a 7-day ramp starting at 30 messages and rising by 10 per day, after which the normal daily limit applies.
Can I skip warming up if I only have a small list?
If the list is genuinely small and fully opted in, a short ramp is usually enough. The risk comes from a brand-new number sending a burst of messages to people who did not expect them, so the smaller and warmer your list, the less ramp you need.
Does the Number Warmer apply to every device?
It applies the ramp to newly connected devices. Once a device finishes its warmer period, it falls back to the ordinary daily message limit, which defaults to 200 per device per day.
What should I do during the warm-up besides sending?
Complete the profile with a photo, business name and description, have real two-way conversations, join a group or two, and reply promptly to anything inbound. Reply rate is a positive signal that automated sending alone cannot produce.
