WhatsApp Business API vs WhatsApp Web automation

Short answer

The Business API is Meta's official channel: approved message templates, published sending tiers, a green tick, and a per-message fee that varies by country and message category. WhatsApp Web automation drives your ordinary WhatsApp account through a real browser on your own machine — no per-message fee, no template approval and no formal limits, but no official standing either, so the account can be restricted. Volume and approval tolerance decide which fits.

What the Business API actually is

The API is a programmatic channel to Meta's own servers, normally reached through a Business Solution Provider. You verify your business, register a number to it, and submit message templates for approval before you can send marketing.

What you get: formal sending tiers that increase as your quality rating holds up, a verified business profile with the green tick, no dependence on a phone or a PC staying online, and no risk of being banned for using automation, because automation is the point.

What it costs you: money per message, and flexibility. Pricing is set by Meta, varies by country and by message category, and has been revised more than once — check current rates with a provider rather than trusting any figure you read in an article. Templates must be approved before use, so you cannot improvise copy, and approval can be refused.

The number is consumed. A number registered to the Business API can no longer be used in the ordinary WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. It is a one-way move unless you deregister it.

What WhatsApp Web automation is

This is what BuzzRelay does. It drives a real browser session logged into your ordinary WhatsApp account, on your own computer, typing and sending messages the way you would by hand — just faster and unattended.

What you get: no per-message cost, no verification process, no template approval, and complete freedom over message content. You are sending as yourself, so replies land in your normal WhatsApp and you can have real conversations. Setup is scanning a QR code.

What it costs you: official standing. WhatsApp's terms prohibit bulk and automated sending, and enforcement is real — numbers do get restricted. Your PC has to be on and connected for a campaign to run, and there is no green tick.

Which one fits

Choose the Business API when:

  • You are sending tens of thousands of messages a month and the per-message cost is worth the certainty.
  • You need the green tick for credibility.
  • You are in a regulated sector where using an unofficial channel is not defensible.
  • Your messages are transactional and templated anyway — order updates, OTPs, appointment reminders.
  • You have engineering resource, or budget for a provider's dashboard.

Choose WhatsApp Web automation when:

  • Your volume is in the hundreds or low thousands a month.
  • Per-message fees would not survive your margins.
  • Your messages are conversational and change often, so template approval would be a constant obstacle.
  • You want replies in your normal WhatsApp, handled by a person.
  • You want to be running today rather than after a verification process.

The honest comparison on cost

The API's per-message pricing is the deciding factor for most small businesses. At low volumes the absolute cost is modest; at scale it becomes the dominant line item, and it is charged whether or not the recipient engages. Browser automation moves that cost to zero and replaces it with a different risk: the number itself.

The way to think about it is expected cost. If a restricted number costs you a day of sending and the price of a new SIM, and it happens occasionally, that is often cheaper than per-message fees at moderate volume. If a restricted number would cost you a customer relationship you cannot rebuild, it is not.

They are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of businesses run transactional messaging through the API on a verified number, and conversational or campaign messaging through ordinary numbers. Different numbers, different jobs.

Where BuzzRelay stands

BuzzRelay implements the WhatsApp Web approach only. It drives your own account through a real browser session on your own PC; there is no cloud sending service and no message queue on our servers. Contacts, templates and campaign history stay in a local database on that machine — see WhatsApp message limits explained for how to work inside the informal limits that come with it.

BuzzRelay does not connect to the WhatsApp Business API, and it does not resell API access. If the API is what you need, you want a Business Solution Provider, not this product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business API and WhatsApp Web automation?

The Business API is Meta's official channel — approved templates, published sending tiers, a green tick and a per-message fee. WhatsApp Web automation drives your ordinary WhatsApp account through a real browser on your own PC, with no fees and no template approval, but no official standing, so the number can be restricted.

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost?

It is charged per message or conversation, and the rate varies by country and message category. Meta has revised the pricing model more than once, so check current rates with a Business Solution Provider rather than relying on a figure quoted in an article.

Can I use the same number for both?

No. A number registered to the WhatsApp Business API can no longer be used in the ordinary WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app unless you deregister it. Businesses that want both typically use separate numbers for transactional and conversational messaging.

Does BuzzRelay use the WhatsApp Business API?

No. BuzzRelay automates WhatsApp Web through a real browser session on your own computer. It does not connect to the Business API and does not resell API access.
